A Bestway frame pool looks like a big project, but most families set one up in a weekend with two or three helpers. The secret is not strength, it is preparation. Get the ground right, lay out the parts in order, and you will be swimming the same evening the water is ready.
Before you start: tools, time and people
Frame pools such as the Bestway Steel Pro MAX and the APX 365 are designed for home assembly. Always read the manual that comes with your own model, because steps and part counts differ by size and shape.
Here is what to keep ready:
- The full pool kit: liner, frame legs and rails, connectors, pins, pump and filter, hoses.
- A groundsheet and, ideally, a foam tile base or protective mat.
- A rubber mallet, a soft cloth, a measuring tape and a spirit level.
- A garden hose or a tanker connection for filling.
- Test kit and chlorine for the first water treatment.
- A fixed power point with an RCCB for the pump, well away from where water splashes.
Set aside a full day, and start in the morning. Hot Indian afternoons make vinyl soft and easy to unfold, but they are tiring for the people building. Early morning and late afternoon are comfortable hours.
Choose and prepare the ground
This is the step that decides how long your pool will last. A tilted or stony surface is the most common reason for a problem later.
Pick the right spot
- Pick a flat, firm area. Even a small slope matters, since a pool holds many tonnes of water.
- Stay away from trees to reduce leaves and roots, and away from overhead wires.
- Keep the pump close to a safe power point, but not in a place where water pools.
- Check there is a drain or garden slope to carry away overflow and backwash water.
Level and clear the ground
- Remove stones, sticks, thorns, roots and sharp objects.
- Level the ground. Do not fill low spots with loose sand or soft soil, as they settle under weight. Dig down the high side instead.
- Check level with a long plank and a spirit level in several directions.
- Lay a groundsheet and then a foam base or tiles for extra protection.
Do not build a pool on a terrace, balcony or slab without checking structural load first. Water is very heavy. Ask a structural engineer and read our guide on terrace pools before you decide.
Grass lawns work well once levelled, but grass underneath will die and may smell. Many owners prefer to build over a paved patch or a levelled compacted base.

Lay the liner and build the frame
Open the box carefully and avoid using knives near the liner. Spread the liner out in the sun for a few minutes if it is stiff. Soft vinyl is easier to handle and less likely to crease.
Step by step
- Lay the liner flat on the groundsheet with the drain valve and hose ports positioned near your power point and drain.
- Check the position of the valves. They cannot be moved once the pool is full.
- Assemble the top rails and legs as the manual shows, connecting them by sliding the leg joints into each rail or by using the connector pins.
- Thread the rails through the liner sleeves, keeping the liner smooth.
- Raise the frame one side at a time, with helpers holding the legs upright, then fix the legs into the foot plates.
- Walk around the pool and check that every leg is vertical, every pin or clip is fully seated, and the liner is not twisted or pinched.
On rectangular and oval models, such as the Steel Pro MAX rectangular and oval pools, the cross-bars and corner connectors need extra attention. Keep the pieces sorted in groups so you do not mix them up.
Fill with about 2 to 3 cm of water first, then walk the edges and smooth out creases with your hands. Do this before the water gets deep, because deep creases are impossible to remove later.
Fill, filter and first water treatment
Once the frame is up and the liner is smooth, start filling slowly.
- Close the drain valve and fit its cap.
- Fill with a hose or from a tanker in stages. Keep checking that the frame stays square and the legs stay upright.
- Stop at the fill line marked inside the pool. Do not overfill.
- Connect the filter pump hoses to the correct inlet and outlet and tighten the clamps. Fit the cartridge or fill the sand filter as per the manual.
- Prime the pump by letting water fill it before you switch on the power. Never run it dry.
- Run the pump and check all joints for leaks.
Test the fill water before adding chemicals. If you are using borewell or tanker water, our guide on hard water in pools explains what to check. Then balance pH, add chlorine as directed on the label, and let the pump run continuously until the water is clear.
Most pools need a day or two before the water is ready for swimming. Test again before anyone gets in. Read our shop for filters, covers, ladders and care kits that make this stage easier.

Safety checks before the first swim
- Frame is level, pins and clips are fitted, and there are no leaks.
- Ladder is stable and rests on a firm, flat base.
- Pump and all wiring are protected by an RCCB, away from standing water.
- Chlorine and pH are in the safe range on your test kit.
- Pool cover or fence is in place for when nobody is swimming.
- A ring buoy or a reaching pole is within reach.
Never leave children alone near a pool, even a shallow one. An adult must supervise at all times, and non-swimmers need to be within arm’s reach.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Skipping ground prep. A pool on uneven ground can bulge and put stress on the legs and seams.
- Letting creases set. Smooth the liner while the water is shallow.
- Overfilling. This strains the walls and can bend the frame.
- Running the pump dry. It can overheat in seconds.
- Using sharp tools or rough shoes inside. Barefoot or soft shoes only.
- Leaving it unattended through strong storms. Strong wind and rain can shift an empty or half-filled pool.
If your pool is not yet bought, remember that KOKOKOKO imports genuine Bestway frame pools to order. You book with a 30% advance, the pool ships in 4 to 7 weeks, and you pay the 70% balance when it reaches our Bangalore warehouse, before dispatch. Sizes marked In stock are simpler: you pay in full and get delivery in about 1 week. Use that waiting time to prepare the ground, so the build day goes smoothly.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to set up a Bestway frame pool?
A small or mid-size pool typically takes a few hours with two or three helpers. Larger pools take longer. Fill time depends on your water supply.
Can I set up a frame pool on grass?
Yes, if the ground is firm and level. Use a groundsheet and foam base. The grass underneath will die over time.
Do I need a professional to install it?
Most buyers set up the pool on their own using the manual. If you are unsure about the ground, power supply or a terrace location, ask a professional.
How long before I can swim after filling?
You need to run the filter and treat the water first. Test pH and chlorine, and swim only when the water is clear and balanced, usually after a day or two.
